Covering a digital timer screen?

I had a Melnor 2-Hose Digital Timer that worked fine for a season, then the screen was fried after being in the sun, despite having a 'sun screen' cover on it the entire time.

The unit still seems to be functional but I can't use it due to the jumbled mess on the screen. I plan on getting another as it worked fine.

I've heard of covering the screen with a bucket or an object to keep the sun from frying the screen. Any suggestions on what to cover the screen with? Thanks in advance.
