crab grass in the n.e.

    Im now mowing my lawyers lawn and he wants me to rid his lawn of crab grass I need an environmentally friendly fix any thought's would be a big help thanks

    The crabgrass is probably died out for this year. In the future make sure you have 100% coverage of real grass when the crabgrass is trying to sprout. It likes to have full sun but if the grass is there, it won't sprout. Also, as much as practical, do not water more often than the grass needs it. Mother Nature has her own schedule but if you can let the soil surface go dry, that much less weed seed will germinate.

    Think about what you do when overseeding to sprout the seeds. First you scalp the grass to let the sunlight in. Second is you seed and water daily. Well if you keep the grass short and water daily, then you are encouraging all the weed seed to sprout and grow.

    Actually the chemical products for crab grass are really expensive anyway so if it is in clumps in bare spots (often the case) dig them out and re-seed. If it is scattered throughout I go to the best management practises given above and hope for the best.
