I just bought a Cub Cadet Z-force 50" mower off eBay. Its got
the 23hp Kohler V-twin engine. 300 hrs on machine.
    I paid $500 for it.

The transmission is in need of repair or "worst case" replaced!
the guy told me it started clicking, and wouldnt pull after awhile.
I'm not very familiar with repairing hydro-pumps, but im pretty sure i could
do it w/ a bit of research and help from those of you that are familiar w/ this specific hydro-trans unit.

Can anyone tell me what steps I should take in diagnosing the problem w/
    the transmission?
I asked him if it had been leaking (hoping it was the seals needing replaced) but he said they havent leaked!

*the picture is of one on eBay that selling for $400
but i am not trying to put that amt. of money into if its not necessary!

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

Those sealed units are basically throwaways. We never rebuilt them at our shop. Just replace them when they go bad.
Have you checked to make sure the emergency release is fully engaged. They have a release that allows you to freewheel the machine if it dies, and you need to push it. If these are not engaged on both sides, only one side will operate.

do you mean the pressure release?
they are turned as tight as possible..

man that woulda been nice though if that were the problem.. haha

i sure wish i could just find a used hydro trans for this unit.
it'll probably be near impossible to find used parts for a Cub Cadet Z mower..
b/c they're (for lack of a better word.. "crap")

Is it both sides that stopped moving ?

Does it move at all now ?
