I have a rental property where some old boxwood hedges are quite overgrown; they range from 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 feet tall. I’d like to trim them back to 3 1/2 to 4 feet tall; I know they’ll look ugly for a while, but I can put up with that. Will a gas powered hedge trimmer like a Stihl HL94 power through the heavier branches?

Is it the R or T model? R is geared for slower stroke rate but more torque and wider teeth spacing. T is optimised for faster stroke rate, narrower teeth and finer cutting. With my battery hsa94r it can cut very thick stuff with no problem (upto 1.5"), face protection is needed as it will spit back fast moving chunks.

What State are the Boxwood located?

The boxwoods are at least 68 years old (they were already in place when we moved into the house in 1957), so if they’ve made it this long, I’ll take my chances with them for a few more years.

Any professional grade trimmers will cut boxwood back as much as you like. But you're playing with fire when you cut that much off at once especially if they make up a hedge row. While most might live (heck, maybe all) there is a chance at least one bush won't, or perhaps just one portion of a bush. If they're individual bushes and one suffers, you can replace it. If it's a hedge row and one doesn't make it, replacement won't look very good for a long while.
