Debris loader--removing impeller

    16 hp Billy Goat debris loader. Impeller has a good sized crack in it. Any suggestions as to how to change it. Does the whole shroud around it need to be taken off? And is it just a bolt that holds it on, or is there a key? Thanks for any tipsl.

    Any chance of welding it and leaving it on.

    Wouldn't take a chance on welding one on the crankshaft and I would not want to be near that blower housing after you do so. As a former employee of a BG servicing dealer we would not send a welded empeller out due to liability reasons. I just worked on a Little Wonder wheel blower that had a welded repair on the impeller. I wouldn't necessarily say that the repair caused the problem but the impeller had been out of balance long enough to loosen the key and had rocked back and forth long enough to wallow out the crank key way. When it came loose it broke the crankshaft off on an angle the last part of which extended about .5" past the crank seal. You have to be the judge about the results you want to live with but if it were me doing the job, I wouldn't give a second thought to putting a new impeller on. Most of the cracked impellers I have seen were the result of sucking in a decent sixed branch or rock. If that could be the case make sure that you imspect for a partially bent crank shaft.

    As far as removing the impeller, remove the cover nuts first and the opening should be large enough to allow the impeller to pass once it is loose. Remove the bolt retaining the impeller and get a like threaded bolt an inch or so longer. Give the impeller hole a good squirt of Liquid Film or light lube. Thread in the longer bolt and while pulling on the impeller apply a air impact hammer to the bolt head. It has been a while since I've done one but the impeller may have an opening which is threaded for a larger bolt in which case you can use the larger bolt to push the impeller off the crankshaft.

    Dutch is correct, You will most likely find larger threads on the inside of the mounting bolt hole.
