Deer or Ex-mark

2158 Views 19 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  lee blount
Considering buying a new 737 deer or an equivalent size Ex-mark. Any thoughts on this would be helpful. If any one has bought one, what kind of price should I expect.

Thanks for your help

No brainer. Once you've used them side by side, shoot once you've used them both period, it's plain which one is better. The Deere 7-iron deck is worthless. Not just that but the green paint alone is expensive.
lmao! So I take it you suggest the Ex-mark, or other.
im very happy with my exmark lazor z hp 44":D

where at in L.A. are ya located lightning?

im in ocean springs, ms
I am in Mobile. I talk to Passagula, but they don't wont to realy do any kind of trading. I am going to look into dumping this Leso as advicsed! :D

Have you actually used the John Deere? I haven't, but I know a few guys in my area that use them and like them.
the 7-iron deck is not junk. I have one and love it. If i had to buy another one i would buy exmark just for deaker support and the overall design i like a liitle better. I along with anothe lco in town fun JD 1445 front deck mowers with a 72" 7-iron deck. The cut of these units in my opinion is as good as my emark walkbehinds cut. It comes down to which one you like better, Use both and then decide.

Thanks! I will give him a call real quick and see what he has to offer. Thanks for the imput.
lightning, yes eXmark is my pic.

tvov yes I used the JD alot a couple summers ago. I used it all day once a week every stinkin' week of the summer... it cut aweful at any speed. Clumped and long clippings. hated it.

longview, maybe you have one of the newer ones I hear they've improved alittle over the previous design that i used. I've not used the new one, but the biggest JD dealer around has eXmark and they mow their huge 10 +/- acre lot with eXmark, ought to tell you something. The salesman brags on the JD deck and says he'll put it up against anything, but he also says that about eXmark and I think he's just trying to get rid of all of those JD's :D also I'd bet that he makes more on a JD sale than an Exmark sale. The places around here that are mowed with the 7 iron deck look awful, the places done with eXmarks look great including mine :D Ya'll can try the JD if you like it good, but I just have this thing with JD and their "commercial" equipment.
All the info yall are giving is great. Thanks for telling me your experiences. This is really going to help me make my dissension. So far, I think I am leaning toward the Ex-mark.
I have a john deere gs30 walk behind and I love it. My dealer is great, the cut is great, and the machine to date ( 4 years bought new) has been great. I know 2 lco's and a nursing home with 7 iron decks. 2 of them cut great, one does not due to lack of maintenance. Same thing with skag, lesco and exmark where I know of at least one guy that loves their machine and it cuts great, and other owners that hate theirs. I think the level of dealer support and proper maintenance bring along of the difference to personal preference with many manufacturers.
I think the previous post hit it on the head. Maintenance has a lot to do with quality of cut. I bought my JD 757 last year and absolutely love it. The 7 Iron deck is great and this thing cuts grass to look like velvet carpet. The mower (esp. the deck) is like a tank. Also, I have four dealers within 20 miles and the one closest is great. Nothing against Exmark. If there were no good dealers around for Deere, I'd have bought Exmark just the same because I've seen the work Exmark is capable of and it is nice too. However, I've always been a big fan of Deere because they've never let me down and I prefer to use the Mercedez of the industry. You get what you pay for! If you're considering the 737(I think you said?), you can't go wrong. Don't cheap out after all this. Don't be sittin' in your garage that night after you've spent all those thousands wondering if you should have bit the bullet and gotten "the real thing"!
Go with YELLOW.............."THE TANK":)
the deere 7 iron deck is very good. in the two years ive owned it i never had to scrape the deck not even once. it would discharge longer clipping than a fab. deck but stayed cleaner and with a nice consistant cut. i also run deere walk behinds and cant complain about the cut on them as well.
Like I tell everyone I use to use exmark now I have switched to Deere. BTW FunkyScagMachines you really don't know how well Deere's are. You said you used one at a deere dealer you worked for and it was not taken care of. Believe me I run 2 Full time crews if they didn't cut well I would not have gone to them!
I have a 737.with a home made striping kit and it cuts great. The deck is strong and keeps clean under. demo each one on the same prop. and then buy. Go with the best dealer service.

Wonder just where these mysterious people are that hate eXmark. Never met one myself. Never seen a post on here with someone stating that they hate their eXmark. Are your eXmark hating lco guys running belt or hydro? I'm sure they are out there, just never met one myself. ( 20+ yrs)

Out of the thousands of people who belong or have visited this site, where are the haters?
I think I see a trend here. All but one of the people(in this thread so far) who love thier 7-iron deck live in warm season grass zones. The 2 deeres I've demoed cut this cool season grass but clumped it up and didn't disperse it very well at all. My scag does a lot better than the deeres did and my exmark, well there's really no comparison. The exmark has a cut that I can't compare to anything else I've ever used. I'm no expert but this is my .02cnts worth.
I agree with Hubb, I have a M665 with the 7-iron deck, it'll cut bahia grass better than anything else I've seen. Southern grass is alot tougher than cool season grass, and bahia is super tough. I can cut foot high bahia and never slow down, I've seen several other makes of mowers around here bogging down under the same conditions, including lazers.
