How many of you guys actually got a fuel tax refund?

As you may know, if you buy fuel from retail gas stations, you pay a federal tax of about $.20/gallon that goes to maintain federal highways and roads. But if you use fuel for off-road purposes (for example in lawnmowers, blowers, plows, etc.) that tax is 100% refundable.

Obviously EVERY landscaper (whether a one-man shop or a 50-man crew) qualifies for this benefit which averages about $600/year for our users. But we estimate that ~$1.6 Billion in fuel tax refunds goes unclaimed every single year - mostly by small businesses like you. This is money the federal government literally owes you (they’ll send you a check when you file your income taxes).

The founders of FuelCred come from Big 4 accounting firms (Ernst & Young and KPMG to be exact) - we literally invented the tech that companies use to file for fuel tax returns.

If you didn’t get a fuel tax refund or don’t know if you’re CPA filed for this on your behalf or have any other questions, we have the answers. We’ve made the process as easy as downloading an app and connecting a credit card. Reach out to us if you want to know how to claim your refund.

Doesn't our CPA handle this? Or if not, can they be told to begin handling this?
Only about 5% of the CPAs we polled even knew about the benefit. If you didn't tell your CPA to file for it (and also provide them with a log of your fuel transactions) then they almost certainly didn't handle this for you. Check your tax return and if you see IRS Form 4136 then your CPA filed for it- if not, then your CPA probably didn't do it.

If you use FuelCred, the app will mail the completed form to your CPA and they can just include it in your return.

Gotcha! Interesting info!
What's your system cost? Does it create additional work on our end? We already have GPS on our trucks and use that for our mileage. Not really looking for something else "to do" if it can be avoided.

FuelCred is a free mobile app you download from the iOS app store. You set a couple of assumptions, connect the credit card you use to buy fuel for your business, and FuelCred automatically identifies your fuel transactions, logs them, calculates your fuel tax refund, generates the IRS form, and forwards it to you and your CPA.
