Discount or free?

    O.k. I'm considering throwing out a promotion with the local pizza parlor, just wondered what everyone's experience was as far as response to the two different offerings. Example, with the purchase of a chemical application customer gets a 50% discount on a medium one topping pizza or with purchase of chemical application customer gets a free desert pizza. Now both are about a $5 value, but I would be inclined to believe the free would sell more apps than the discount. What do you all think and if you've tried something similar what has your response been like?
    This is in a small (population 2000) town about 4 miles from my home/shop. I didn't target it last year but am going to market more to this town this year due to its close proximity.

    I would think free would attract more then just % off.

    People like free stuff...even if its the same value as the other option.

    Being a owner of 4 pizzerias and a lco, let me suggest a different option. I personally wouldn't offer a free pizza with service to attract new customers. I don't feel it's necessary. Customers want our services and you need to get and keep your name in front of them all the time.
    Talk to the best pizzeria in your town. I'm talking about the locally owned, neighborhood pizzeria- not Dominos or Papa Johns. Each pizza box sent out the door should have a "bounceback" coupon/menu with coupons on them. These cost the independents money and some don't even know to do it. Go in with the idea that you will pay to have these printed with their menu/coupon on 1/2 and your company on the other. It's a win/win situation. Customers are loyal to the local,family owned neighborhood pizzeria and also, the people that own it normally knows the majority of customers and have a "in" with the locals.

    If you go with the free pizza, split the expense with the pizzeria. Go in with the attitude that you will bring business to them. Instead of you paying $5, talk to the pizzeria about giving you free coupons for new accounts. Also add that you will advertise their pizzeria to all your customers by placing menu's/coupons with invoices- these could be the bouncebacks you had printed.

    Great points to go over, I will be meeting with our local pizza parlor owner to hammer out details.

    After reading your post I thought of giving a guy that cleans carpets locally a call about some piggyback marketing. So again thanks loads for the reply it definitely provided the spark in the right direction. :waving:

    I met with pizza parlor owner, we still have some work to do but one scenario we spitballed was the free dessert pizza providing you purchase a lawn application from me. He will sell the dessert pizza to me at his cost, we split the flier/advertising cost. This was our initial meeting and we only discussed for about 20 minutes, plan on having something concrete within a couple of weeks. I want to coincide promotion with our spring pre-ems and run prior to our broadleaf, creeping charlie, etc. fert and squirt applications in both the late spring and fall.

    Thought of talking to a guy that has his own carpet cleaning business as well, see if he would be interested in placing a flier or info on my company in with his statements, I would in turn do the same for him.
    Anybody try that? How was it received by your customers?

    Just got off the phone with the owner of the carpet cleaning business and we are going to exchange promotional material to send out with our
    invoices/statements to each others customers. He has been in business for himself for 16 years, and has an outstanding reputation. I think this will go a long way in expanding into other market areas.
