Well, if you specified that you need 1/2 upfront and they haven't paid, that spells it all out to me.

And this is based on what the guys are saying...
Did you get a signed contract?
And, what does it say, about getting paid?

I did like the suggestion about calling and asking, that is the least one should do.

Doesn't matter, at least not in terms of being stiffed lol
  2. next time try doing as most middle to large construction companies do. 1/3 up front, another 1/3 when materials are on site then the remainder is on completion. that way you get materials covered before you ever set foot on the property, and you should have some extra money for paychecks until the project is done.

After reading the posts by all you guys, I must be really naive. I've been in business for 25 years and do mostly commercial work. I don't think I've ever gotten a deposit before doing work. What kind of people are you dealing with? I deal with reputable businesses that I can trust. If I didn't know they were trustworthy and financially sound, I wouldn't be doing work for them in the first place.

Forgot to say that I rarely use written contracts, either. Boy that's really naive! How many times have I been "stiffed?" ZERO

Not saying you're wrong, because obviously you've been at it for a while. However, how are you certain you're dealing with a financially sound company? Are you checking their bank statements to confirm?

I guess this day in time you have to be more concerned with people screwing you.

Think about it, they haven't even given him the deposit because they are waiting for money. Think about how long they'd wait to pay him the final bill if they hadn't made a deposit. I'm not so sure I wouldn't tell them to have a check ready the day it's complete.

Agreed. It certainly is not a good sign that they say they are waiting for the deposit money to come. And yes that begs the question of how long will it take to get the balance after the work.

If they agreed to have work done with half up front...and they cant come thru with the money because "they are waiting on money"....good luck getting paid for anything else. Dude, thats a major red flag. Well, I take it back, you will probably get paid, but it will be like pulling teeth. Good Luck!

That could be a factor, I suppose. City itself about 50,000 and the market area about 80,000.
