Do you or your employees smoke on the job?

In a constant quest to be as professional as possible and to hopefully attract larger campus and corporate clients and also to be healthy.....I have made my company a tobacco free company. With the type of work that we all do, this has become an issue for me to enforce.

On two occasions I have caught my main guy’s lying to me about it, but it is something I’m adamant about. I could fire them, and start over again, but i know the guys are good guys; just the strong urge to smoke is hard to break on a long hard day in the field.

I see other companies smoking, flicking butts in yards, and just overall looking trashy. Have any of you tried this and succeeded? Or would you have any suggestions on how to enforce it?

I have a no-smoking policy. I stopped about a year ago. I do have an e-cig I use however for my fix.

I go so far as to make up my own mix these days with custom flavors. So much better tasting and less smell.

I have a guy who helps me out on somethings and he smokes. Not a chain smoker either. But I'll let him take a smoke break and it gives me the chance to break to and just go over everything were doing to make sure its right. Worth the 3 minute break.

I don't smoke, and if I had employees I would not let them smoke on the job. I used to chew and would only chew when I was driving from job to job.

During the busy season I probably smoke a half pack a day because I don't have time while I am on the job and probably wouldn't on a customers property anyway. If I smoke it is on the road between jobs. During the off season I will smoke a pack or more a day with more time and boredom. If I had employees they would not be allowed to smoke while on a customers property.

My guy smokes but flicks all butts into the bed of the truck... never in a customers yard

I'm looking to hire. What's the best way to state up front zero tobacco use during working hours?

Another company does a lawn across.the street from me. Puffing on cigs while string triming. Quality of work is poor as well. Just looks.unprofessional....

I allow my guy to smoke in the truck between lawns (never at a property) but I would love to go to non smoking completely. I think GMLC is right on. Blunt, concise communication before hiring but it still seems difficult to find guys in this field who don't smoke.
