I'm looking at buying a 1996 Dodge 2500 4x4 SLT with 61,000 miles on it. Old lady is selling it because her husband passed away. Are there any known problems with these trucks I should look out for. Her asking price is $9000.00 but I think that seems a little high. Thanks

If it's a gasser it seems plenty high to me, and if it's a diesel seems plenty cheap. I'd watch the automatic transmission, but that's about all you would need to worry about that I know of.

just make sure and turn the overdrive off while towing or hauling anything and you will be fine. That price seems very reasonable to me. Not great, but reasonable.

Exactly what he said... If it is a Cummins, I'd snatch it in a microsecond.. If it was a 360, I'd run, quickly..

Take a good look at the transmission. My '96 1500 SLT with 360 & 141K miles has been rebuilt TWICE, and I don't pull that often. Based on what I know mine to be worth, the price seems too high.

Had two gassers before my diesel. The fisrt was a 95 and I traded it with 50k and no tranny problems. My 97 I bought used with 30k and when I traded it with 65k the tranny was going bad.

$9000 is way high for that truck. I'd say 6k to $7500.

I have a 1996 318 and it has done good by me. I rebuilted the tranny at 110k and just replaced the water pump, and all the hoses new T-stat at 130k. It is a very dependable truck. I use it strickly for hualing my lawn equipment and my dog. He likes the rumble. Like others have said if it is a diesel buy it in a heartbeat. I get about 15 to 16 miles around town and 18 to 20 on the interstate. and that is with or with out the trailer.
