really no difference , but we used to go steel shaft but found the cable ones have never worn out so we have 4 ofthe 280 t in use right now and have had zero problems at all. they are replacing the 311 models we were using and loved, but the 280t is lighter and feels more powerful than the bigger 30cc 311. hope that helps
 
If you need more "grunt" go with the "T" model, just remember that it has a lower head speed to deliver the higher torque. I personally like the "S" models or solid drive in all my trimmers. The flex drive to me has too much shake every now and then.
 
it just has more torque, or balls. i guess i can contest to the little shake you can feel once in a while on the flex drive, but not a biggie
 
Get the "T" More torque!!!
