employeehandbooks can get you sued

    stuff like
    strike 1 verbal warning
    strike 2 written warning
    strike 3 your out
    were i work at we got books 13 years ago.the company inforsed it for about1 year then it was never thought of after that now they fired a foreman last year and he is sueing them for over 200,000. for he never got any warnings the company lawyer told them they sould settle out of court
    the man needed fired (bad atitude)he thougt the company oews him something

    Sounds like it isn't the employee handbook that was the problem, but the company's cavalier attitude towards its use.

    Poor business management.

    remember that you can sue for just about anything, its whether a jury will agree with you as to the merits of a suit.

    Right or wrong, many lawyers like to settle to avoid lenghthy litigation and the fees that go along with it. (Plus easy money for little effort on the co. attorneys part).

    I'm with John.

    NOT having a handbook will get you into trouble more often than having one will. And it looks like it was the enforcement of the policies that was the problem here, not the handbook itself. The rules have to be followed by both parties.

    Hand books... yea i have worked for a company that had one ... and being in manegment thier i used to when i took action..making one up is a good practice...i have no employee's at this time but i do have about 3 pages of text in the form of notes on how i want my employees to conduct themselfs,dress,use safty measures,report problems,theift,acedents,things that cause on the spot trermination..etc etc etc .... goo way to convey how you want to operate your company , keep all folks on the same page and covers your ASH........
