My '08 FT SD with 23hp Kawasaki that 8 hours on it does not run smoothly when blade is not engaged, the engine acts like it is gasping for fuel. However when I engage the blade it seems to run more smoothly. When the engine is running the bulb on the in-line fuel filter is empty, you can see the gas squirting through but it is not full. Should the bulb be full of fuel at all times? A couple of weeks ago I ran one fuel tank completely out, I switched tanks and was able to restart the engine. Do I need to bleed the fuel line? If so, how?:confused:

You shouldn't have to bleed the fuel system unless its a EFI and yours is not.
Your telling me it runs ok when the blades are engaged and the unit is at full throttle?
If so it sounds like there may be something in a fuel passage in the carburetor.
Have you talked to your dealer? with only 8 hours on the mower they can certainly help you.

It lopes at low as well as high throttle level. Should the fuel filter be at least partially full at all times?

I know it is difficult to diagnose a problem over the internet, I was just hoping it was something simple I could correct. I work week days and my dealer is not open on weekends and 40 miles away so it is difficult to get it in for repairs. Not to mention the heat I will take from my wife for buying a $7,000 mower that has loose bolts and doesn't run right.

Id take it to your dealer. Id say something in the carb, or fuel pump. Your dealer can fix it easily.

It really sounds like something in the carburetor passages to me, but cant be sure.
The fuel filter should be full when the unit is running, but thats going to depend on how the engine is running since its a vacuum / pressure operated fuel pump, if the engine isn't running right the pump may not be pulling the fuel in right.

You definetly have a fuel problem, its in the carb. If you ran out of fuel the debris that was probably floating in your tank got sucked through the line. Now it is in your carb, if you haven't done so take it to your dealer. We see it all the time.......
