Estimating hours on a used ZTR?

I've been looking at used ZTR's and getting some feel for how much certain mowers are worth based on age and hours.

I assume that it's fairly easy to disconnect the hour meter on a mower, so are there ways to gauge by visual inspection the approximate age of a machine?
i.e. worn-out tires won't happen before XXX hours, paint worn off the foot rest takes YYY hours, etc...

I suppose it's like looking at a used car and guessing if the odometer is correct based on the brake pedal wear, seat wear, tire wear, etc...

Nearly impossilbe. And the likelyhood that someone disconnected the hour meter is very slim. and even if they did, they likely did it once they started thinking about selling it.

Worn tires is a terrible indication....depends on how much asphalt and or concrete they've been driving it across.... that wears tires several times faster than turf does.

Also, our machines are cleaned every day.... even the underside of the decks are pressure washed... it's bad enough carrying weed seed from one job to the next during the day.... no point in starting the next days route that way.

I have 4 yr old machines that look like they're maybe 3-4 months old.

And lastly a guy that would disconect the hour meter likely would have abused the mower anyway... and abuse is pretty easy to spot. Best way out is to buy new so you don't have to worry about it.

I very rarely buy any used equipment.... pretty much has to be a bargain basement price before I will.
