A 48-year-old Smyrna, Del., man is facing DUI charges after state police say he drove his lawn tractor across railroad tracks and was hit by a 21-car freight train.
Police spokesman Lt. Tim Winstead said Charles Melvin was airlifted to Christiana Hospital. He was admitted with broken bones, facial fractures and cuts.
The accident happened around 3:20 p.m. Tuesday on Blackbird Greenspring Road, near Smyrna.
According to police, the freight train was northbound and was approaching a section of track that crosses a privately owned drive where Melvin was mowing the lawn.
Winstead says railroad workers slowed the train but couldn't stop it as it approached the crossing. Melvin was thrown from the tractor.
"Honey, I'm home early from mowin', hit another train today!"

Geez,... and we think it's bad when we hit golf balls, and such. I'll tell you one thing,.... THAT is one tough tractor!
