What is the best way or ways you guys dig out for the retaining wall base?
ummmmm.......I dunno - from the surface and work your way down?
What did I win, is this a trick question?
With a excavator like a Cat 301.5 on up depending on how much you have to dig out. Also paired with a skid steer if possible. I dig from the side. Sometimes you have to use a shovel, pick and wheelbarrow since some areas are soo tight.

Thanks for the reply I was comtemplating using a trencher on a mini skid but was open to any ideas. I don't mind the shovel and pick but looking for a little easier and faster way.
We have dug footers as follows:
* By hand with shovels
* With full size back-hoes
* With mini-excavators
* With Mid-size, steel track excavators (as seen in the pic)
* With forks on skid steer

If we can get the bobcat with hoe attm. there we dont do the job. Im getting
to old and fat to do work hard.
I just dug one yesterday with a backhoe. total overkill, but I gave the customer a written one year guarantee on workmanship, so I don't want this thing to settle at all. we put about 8"-24" of compacted RCA throughout the entire trench. digging by hand sux and in the long run often costs you more in labor.
I dig almost all by hand. That's why I lift the world in the gym.
If I do to much with machines I will surely surcome to old age.
