I read somewhere that a mini excavator can be hauled in the back of a truck. I have a 3600 pound excavator. I always thought that a 3/4 ton pick up had a limited load capacity of 1500 pounds even if it has dual wheels. Is that correct or is it possible to carry more than that?

Depending on the weight and setup of the truck some can legally carry more than 1500lbs and some cannot. My legal payload is 1600-1800 lbs. The rated payload from Dodge is 3600 lbs but that will put me well over my GVWR.

Just for yucks, after reading this thread, I drove a 301.8 Cat with a 16" bucket into the back of my 3500 Chevy and drove around the block. It actually worked pretty well, just looked weird.

Its been done you just need to have a good bank to back up to so you can walk the machine into the box. You just have to be carefull a mini can do som damage to a P/U box. We put 6000lb mini excavators on 1.5 ton flatdecks it works load them with a forklift strap it down and off you go.

I wouldn't put anymore than a 3000lb mini in a dually P/U if it would fit between the wheel wells.

The one contractor in this area packs their 161 in a Rolloff truck (tandem axle) in a low side 20' box. It works great they can carry the excavator into places where they have a concrete driveway and don't want a steel tracked machine crawling down it. It also saves dragging the trailer around its quicker to load the machine into the box chain the machine in and pull the box on and off they go.
