Your looking at about 2k for a Ford reman tranny. Call around and get the best price. I'd check the dealer, Jasper, and any of the chain tranny shops, plus any small indy tranny shops in your area. If you are looking for a junk yard tranny, the prices vary widely area to area, hard to say what the price would be.
MY dad jsut had his auto matic OD in a Ford F150 94model I think any way the local repair shop told him the best way to go was a Ford Reman trans it come in ready to stab in and with a nation wide warranty for 36 months and not for sure what the mileage was either unlimited or 36K outthe door price was $2150.00
Last year my dad put a reman tranny and a super heavy duty torque converter in his F350. It was $3,500 out the door with a 3 year/30,000 mile warranty or something like that on both the tranny and converter.
Change the oil and filter in the transmission and have some of the oil tested to see how much metals are in it. The biggest thing for a automatic is keep them from getting hot so a good transmission cooler is a must. I don't know if a E4OD transmission can use a good quality synthetic or not but that may help.
If you pull the transmission dipstick out and look at the oil if it smells bad and looks black as tobys azz then the transmission has been overheated.
I wouldn't get worried about break downs before they will happen. If you own anything with tires it is going to cost money when it breaks down
