What is your favorite way to renovate a lawn that has clumps of grass in some areas, uneven in other areas, no grass in some areas? I rototill and regrade, seed, fert, lime.

Power rake, put down lots of seed, apply 1 inch compost on top. Water every 4 hours.

Aerate the lawn in 2 directions (min) then slice seed in 2 directions. This method is much easier than rototilling and having to regrade. Water as often as it needs it depending on site conditions. You want to keep the seed damp until it germinates. Most seed jobs fail due to lack of moisture. With a slice seeder, good seed/soil contact is guaranteed and all the thatch you pull out acts as mulch to keep it from drying out too quickly. This is my method for renovating worn out, or insect damaged lawns. payup
