I am looking at a Ferris 3100Z mower. They offer a 37 gross hp* Kawasaki™ FX1000V DFI and a 36 gross hp* Vanguard™ BIG BLOCK. What is The better mower or are they pretty much the same? Does one have more problems than the other?

I have been trying to line up a demo of the IS3100 for some time now.
    Have you drove one?

I don't have any long term experience with either engine.
Lots of threads and information about questionable quality Kawasaki BB motors.
The Vanguards don't seem to have negative threads and comments.

At this point in my new mower search, If I had the choice, I would go Vanguard.

Go with the Vanguard and don't look back. The BB Kawi's are having problems..... again:rolleyes: Plenty to read on it right here in these forums right now.

There's a member here named Choppin that has the DFI. He is selling it after a year. Ask him what he thinks about it. The machines are fine, but those BB's Kawi's are still not right.

We have two 3100's & a 2000 with the Vanguard BB, they are great!! From here on any new ZTR purchase will be the 3100 with the BB.

Had a few problems with the 37 dfi in its early stages but now it has done great. It's a 2013 model with 700 hrs on the clock. The coil packs needed replacing at about 300hrs. The engine has been excellent and i have always been a kawaski fan. Ferris is the only way to go.

I own a Kawasaki FX1000V with less than 100 hrs. that needed a camshaft replacement at 90 hrs., which came as a directive from Kawasaki due to a service bulletin. The strange thing was Kawasaki immediately shipped the cam kit when knowing from very detailed information the problem I was having did not relate to what the service bulletin described. I think there is more to the cam problem than Kawasaki is willing to admit at this point in time.

Don't even consider another engine except the BB Vanguard on a 3100, you will be pleased beyond expectation with this engine.

The one I am looking at is a Ferris 3100Z 37 hp Kawasaki, only 106 hrs, kept in garage, like new condition, moved to smaller property shortly after purchase and don't need.... 61inch deck zero turn, paid over $13,000 just over a year ago brand new. They are asking $8,000. Any suggestion on if this is a good deal or not?

I have a 2013 model with the Vanguard for sale.. 285 hours and I liked it a lot better than my DFI I had.

Digital fuel injection, which is an open loop design, and not really any better on fuel usage than a carb. It may be a bit better in throttle response though.
