Well I suppose I,ll get alot of [talk] about this But this is better and right way to change oil in the NEW vanguard 37hp engines, I did this at 44 Hours you,ll be surprised,,

First it takes 6 quarts to change oil NOT 5,,

First drain oil like they say out of drain---Take filter out---Now take the Plug out of the engine block lower left looking from back and drain another pint out--Now look inside take can brake-clean and flush the tank out,,you be surprised of all metal comes out,,
Close plugs and put 5 quarts in tank with NO oil filter,, NOW take off the one oil line from tank that comes from engine [yellow tabs] ---Take plug wires off and crank engine over with line into a cup and pump out another pint of dirty oil till you see clean oil come out,---Now put line back on--filter in--plug wires on and add ANOTHER quart of oil and you will have a REAL oil change,
I use Racing oil with alot Zinc over 20 years,,

Other way you are adding one quart of dirty oil to the nice clean oil you are putting in [NOT GOOD]

See photos of the filter I cut apart and ALL the metal in it from the new engine only at 44 hours---

Briggs has a web-page where they talk about there being 1Qt of oil left in engine when changing oil just in tank,, When I read that it got me thinking about doing oil change this way,,,I,ll have to look for it again,

The system keeps oil 6 to 18 degrees lower than traditional systems which reduces thermal breakdown. It features a dry sump engine, meaning that the oil isn’t maintained in the cylinder, but instead in a separate reservoir. So 1 quart of oil remains in the engine with 5 in the reservoir rather than the typical 2 or 2.5 quarts in the engine, which increases the life of the oil, said Ben Miller, product manager.

Will these engine go another 2000 hrs longer than traditional engines?

Heres e-mail I just got back from Briggs other day;
Hello Charles,

Thank you for your inquiry.

I was asking for the model number to address your first question about draining the oil. As for the metal shavings, yes they are from the manufacturing of the engine. That is why we recommend the engine break-in procedure and changing the oil after the first 5 hours of use
Interesting cause in owners manual it says nothing like this?? Confusing for sure??

ALSO I just changed the hydro oil [TZ-5400] and you can see All Crap in the filters some metal & some???? who knows? Changed at 46hours-these photos from Hydros;
