I purchased a used fh721v - ds09-r with only 650hr on it. I was told it would run but had loss of power when pto was engaged. Well compression tested it and had no compression in 1 and 30psi in 2. Figured id take a chance on it for $100 for complete motor.

It ended up having a broke rod. I assume i will need:io
Gasket set - $260 includes pistons & rings
Crank case cover
(2) connecting rods - $75 pair
Pistons/rings - priced above
Crank (maybe) - $180

Cylinder walls look good but there is damage just outside of cylinders, heads look good (need cleaned up) all splines on crank and cam are good.

Where did the bearing in the piston pic come from? It was sitting in case when i opened it up (much smaller than cam bearings)?

So i need expert opinions, do i rebuild or part it out?

The more i look at it you are right. I will be parting it out. I believe i was missing(in small pieces) a few parts from the oil pump as well. I could be wrong and will double check tomorrow but that last picture may be part of the lubricating system. I do not see it in any diagrams relating to the governor

your at $600 (crank/rods and .050 pistons/rings) + governor assembly and your time-n-labor...who knows if part of the casting was cracked....looking at the one picture I see hair-line fracture from a bearing insert....that's never a good sight....who knows what that rod might have hair line fracture when it released. I see where it hit the side casing....probably should lap and seat new valves too and head gaskets.......then machine work for fixing the jug edges

In general I NEVER REBUILD motors that go "boom" only ones that smoke or have top-end/head problems.

$1200-1500 buys your a new motor shipped to your door... w/warranty and no other "iffy" parts....about 30% more in cost over an "iffy" rebuild

Heck you can get $10 for recycling itThumbs Up
