FH721V-GS24 (200 hours) surging after about 1 hour of use

This FH721V-GS24 is on a Hustler Z, the engine has less than 220 hours and ran great until a little over a week ago.

Symptoms:
Suring engine after about 1 hour of cutting. I can even it out using the choke. Sometimes will die when surging if blades are turned off.

Several times after choking it, it ran well again for another 30 minutes or so.

What has been done:
New Fuel filter.
Cleaned carb.
Changed Plugs.

Seems like a fuel issue for sure but the after-use is throwing me off. Vapor lock? If so how to test/fix?

Thanks in advance.

try adjusting the idle screws on the carb. also could be a bad float in the carb.
Check the voltage across the battery when it is surging. High voltage (bad voltage regulator). can cause surging.
Humm... well I have been through this multiple times and many things can cause it.

I would pump gas out of the tank into a clear container and allow to settle for starters. Check for water in the gas... sometimes depending on storage and temperature differential, the tank will start to sweat inside, droplets run down until enough collects over a time period to be a problem, you start to load the engine a bit and it sucks a gulp of water and then it won't stop surging. Sometimes you can look at the arms moving on the carb, apply finger pressure and get it to level out. I've been in a pinch and ran the screw down on the arm until it couldn't surge up and down just to finish and get trailered.

You can also carry a little container along, then when it starts, stop and put that in catch position and open the bowl drain and see what you get.

I have also seen it be electrical as already mentioned. Fritzy coil can cause it too. Works ok at first and then once good and hot it starts acting up. The fuel solenoid can do weird crap too. It can also be vacuum line issues or the fuel pump, gets hot supple and leaky so the fuel delivery can't keep up.

It's a pain. You're on the right path, just keep eliminating, simple stuff first.

So with 200 hours, are you not under warranty ?

This tsb isn't for your particle engine, but it is one one of the things I check for. So don't use the part numbers if you want to throw money at the problem.

So inspect your carb for any missing welch plugs. if you find one missing, talk to your dealer about a replacement welch plug.
