I picked this up couple days ago. 2003 Chevy 4500 220,000mi. 8.1L gasser, 10' crysteel box.
$13,500Thats a slick truck. What did it set you back?

Yeah, everyday. The only reason why i went with this truck and the gas motor was because i looked at others like this with the duramax and it was a significant amount more to go with diesel.Do you a lot of landscaping? That's a cool truck but a bit much to pull around mowers. You better enjoy cheap gas now. That 8.1 is like flushing a toilet when you stomp on it. My dad has two of them in his Baja boat.

Ive heard otherwise about the motor, but who knows time will tell. I feel like we picked it up for a relatively good price that if it really comes down to needing a new motor somewhere down the road i can still come out money ahead. The 8.1 was not known for being a great long lasting engine. I would not put a lot of faith in that motor. Hopefully it was not more then about $3500. Like the other guy said the millage is going to bankrupt you.
The 8.1 was GM grand idea to satisfy guys who had D-Max dreams but a trailer park budget. It was a short lived engine that most people who could do even basic math quickly figured out was going to make them go broke. The 8.1 Vortec should have been called the Gas Bong 8.1. Dodge was guilty of making the V-10 as well.
Sorry, I've got "sick truck" tunnel vision from hearing it so many times. Its slick. Not sick

Not 100% sure, havent gotten DOT inspection yet. I dont think i would be able to max it out if you know what i mean. If the truck gets DOT'D for 26,000 and only weighs 17,000 there isnt anyway i can add 9k in that box. Now pulling my skid loader will be pushing that for sure. How much weight can you load into the bed?
Agree.i can see warning someone before they buy something but, telling someone who just bought a truck and is excited about it that it is a piece of crap is just uncalled for. i hope it works well for you and you get plenty more miles and years out of it. :usflag:
I agree with you 100%i can see warning someone before they buy something but, telling someone who just bought a truck and is excited about it that it is a piece of crap is just uncalled for. i hope it works well for you and you get plenty more miles and years out of it. :usflag:
I will be adding something soon. Probably nothing this winter, do it right away in the spring.Looks like a super nice truck, but that bed is way too low. Do you have any plans on adding gussets to to back and adding sideboards so you can get full use out of it?
I will next spring, would like to blast the box and give her a fresh coat before next summer.I love the body on those trucks. It just looks so nice. I'm sure you'll get another 220k out of it! You going to letter it up?
not to hi jack this guys thread...but delete the egr, stud the heads with arp head studs, put an sct tuner in the truck, and some gauges and drive it everyday. I would bet money that will solve 95-100% of your problems....also don't baby your truck, that is the worst thing for them especially turbo's on 6.0's they have to be driven and driven hard. as in put it to the floor once per day for a few seconds at least. and guaranteed you won't ever have turbo issues again, as long as you have plenty of oil in the motor.Agree.
And this from a guy who DID buy a truck before doing his homework... 2004 F550 with the famous 6.0..... we dropped it off at the mechanic's shop again today! LOL
i agree completely with you......nice truck now go use it.i can see warning someone before they buy something but, telling someone who just bought a truck and is excited about it that it is a piece of crap is just uncalled for. i hope it works well for you and you get plenty more miles and years out of it. :usflag:
You are kind of a butt plug aren't you?I'm sure many of us have been guilty of buying a truck with out doing a little research and I'm guessing that is what you did. If you simply look online you can find the same truck with a Diesel for about the same price from dealers trying to get top dollar. You can also find gassers with half your millage for just a tad more then you paid. From a private seller you can usually get a much better deal. It's all a learning experience.
Also, can we put the phrase "sick truck" out to pasture please Lawnsite moderator. I think that's one semi oxymoron adjective we can do without. It's been used to death and well, well beyond.
