Hey guys, listen, I've got a ram 1500 w/hemi and am looking to upgrade to a 3/4 ton or maybe even a 1 ton. Now I've heard a lot of controversary as the new cummins 6.7 liter isn't as fuel efficient as the ole' 5.9 liter. Just wanted some thoughts from you guys, trying to decide between 07 cummins and newer with the 6.7 or older with the 5.9. Thanks in advance.

Ive had a 1500 ram and I currently have an 07 dodge ram 3500 Single rear wheel 5.9 liter diesel and I just got rid of an 07 dodge ram 3500 dually 6.7 diesel. I love my 5.9 great gas milage no problems as of 59k miles. My 07 6.7 had every problem you can name. to be fair it was one of the first 6.7 that got sold. But for gas milage you def wana go with a 5.9 liter. If your willing to take of the dpf on the 6.7 its a great engine.

I have an 03 ram 3500 5.9 SRW crew cab and never get more then 10-11 Around town since day one. Now the highway is a different story...... can get 20-21MPG doing higway driving. Unfotunately this truck only sees the highway about once a year as its strictly a work truck.

I like the 5.9/6.7L mostly for the inline six layout. Irregardless of problems go for a pre 07 5.9L so you don't have to worry about the new emission regs on the 6.7L engines. At least they don't require the BlueTec fluid like the Duramax and new Ford 6.7L V8 TD do. If I had to, I'd choose a 6.7L V8 over any other new HD diesel.

I would reccommend staying away from the 6.7's altogether. Whatever you buy, look for one as close to stock as you can (no programmer, hopefully never was one installed, as that will adversly affect engine longevity.)

Many folks on the Dodge diesel sites (do a google search for some) have had no troubles with the 6.7L. However many have, and it appears at this point to be emissions related primarily.

As for transmissions, the 48RE autos from 2003.5+ seem to be holding up much better than the dreaded 47RE's from the second gen models ('94 - 02), and few of these sneaked into the early '03's but you should be safe if you stick '04 - '07 (pre Jan 2007 build date). That said the Asian automatic paired with the 6.7L seems to have a great reputation overall.

Beyond all that, I would strongly reccommend that you consider a 6-speed, especially an '05 & newer that uses the G56 6-speed. They are pretty bulletproof, nice to dirve, reponsive overall as a manual. But if you're going to plow, probably better do it with an auto. Good luck with your search.

Thanks guys, makes my decision a little easier, looking at a 2005 3500 6spd manual dually. 67k mile for 24k. Thanks again.

Sounds like a really nice truck...hope it works out for you!

Good luck and test drive it thoroughly.

One other note, if it has lighter-colored seats you may want to consider a set of seat covers for it if it's to be a work truck. I have heard reports from owners that these lighter seats stain easily and are quite difficult to clean afterwards.

You are not kidding on the lighter colored seats!!! My 06' dodge has the lighter colored (but not tan) seats and even with heavy beach towels they still get dirty underneath and stained up even tho I am a clean freak...only thing I miss out of my old Zr2 is my black leather. I will never get another truck without leather.

Get about 14-15 around town no matter how I drive it and jumps up to around 20 on the highway but truck doesnt see much more than 1 hour on the highway usually so I havent burned a FULL tank on all highway yet. 06 SRW longbed.
