If this thread is redundant and answers can be found elsewhere, please forward me accordingly.

My situation is that after 23 years of being an active owner/operator of our family business, I'm moving off the active crew to oversee a new division of our company that's not related to landscape installs and maintenance.

I've always had the trucks go from and return to the shop on a daily basis but this new structure will have the 2 foreman take their trucks home during the week (Monday-Friday) and return them on the weekends. My question is, do those of you that already have the foremen take trucks home pay them from when they leave their house and off when they return to their house, or is it paid when hitting the first site them off when leaving the last site? I'm also wondering if there is a feasible middle ground, as well.

Any insights you have would be greatly appreciated.

hourly pay should start when they arrive at the business or job site. The miles they commute to and from their home is a taxable benefit to them. Talk to your accountant.

Thanks for the replies. Definitely lots to think about.

@heatus - Our most senior guy lives fairly central to the way I'm looking at restructuring my routes. With me not driving the truck and being on the crew full time, it'll streamline things to have my truck with him more often. He can get to most of the first daily site visits in 10 minutes from his house, whereas it's 25 minutes for him to get to the shop, then to the first site. We'll also both save time and fuel each day.

I was mainly just wondering if he should be paid from when he hops in the truck each morning or at the first site.

@snomaha - I'll talk to me accountant but can you expand on your point a bit? So, the foreman should on company time when he arriving at the first site, commuting between sites, and off when he leaves the last site? Does this deem the time commuting to and from home their time?

Sorry for the simple question. This is a new business angle for me.

Can only give my experience based on the rules in the states - Dont know BC. We have several trucks that go home with managers/key people - based on the mileage of the commute, the employee is taxed on the value of the benefit.

We always provide a compensation statement for new hires - gives the salary and all other benefits dollar value (health, retirement match, PTO, company vehicle). Helps them understand total compensation, instead of just money in hand.

My thoughts are :
Can they Park the trucks and equipment at their homes ie zoning laws.
So, they get someone to drop them off on Monday and pick them up after work on Friday. Seems like a pia.
They will put lots of extra miles on your truck on personal trips.
Anytime I let an employee drive one of my vehicles home. It didn't go well.
