I have collected quite a few ideas from others who renovate lawns and need a few more.
    1. Kill and till. - broadcast app of pesticides/ lot of work to till

    2. 3 way herbicide, wait 2 weeks, topdress/overseed

    3. Scrape off lawn with bobcat, put down sod.

    4. Kill w/ roundup, hit again after a week. scalp/aerate/seed.

I am looking for the best method (Pacific north-west) and best time, to turn a lawn that is 40 % weeds or worse into a thing of beauty.

Spray with 2,4-D to kill broadleaves. Wait a while (I don't remember exactly how long), and then slit seed.

    Just another option.

I don't know what your native turf types are, but around here, to fill in a lawn like that, we'd probably look at seeding a 50/50 mix of rye and bluegrass. The rye will germinate fast, the bluegrass lasts longer than the rye...

If there's already somewhat of a stand there, I'm of the opinion that you should work with it as much as you can. Saves heartache when the goose-drowning rains come......
