Pulled my machine out of storage and the gas gauge on the right side reads "empty" and it's full. What's the best fix?

Common problem, especially with this ethanol blend fuel. Your float is stuck on the bottom. You need to clean the shaft that the fuel float rides on on the sending unit. Every mower I've ever worked on that had gauge issues had a gummed up sending unit float. Typically it's just a matter of prying the sending unit out of the tank that's not reading properly and using brake cleaner and rags on the shaft and working the float around till it moves freely. The hardest part is getting the sending unit out because you always feel like your right on the edge of braking it but they are pretty stout and I've never had one brake on me. Easy fix.

Thanks for helping me db! I'm still finding my way with my wrenching skills. Do I attack this thing from the bottom up with an empty gas tank? Or do I pry out the gauge and go from there? New to this procedure, obviously? I wonder if there's a Youtube (there's one for just about everything else these days lol!)

Everyone I've ever worked on the sending units are on top of each tank, usually under a panel or something. I didnt really matter if they were full or not because the the units were installed at about gas cap level. In your case I'd probably drain about half the tank out just to be safe. They are usually just pressure fit into the tanks with thick rubber sleeves or gasket materials. I usually just get a wide piece of heavy flat metal and/or wide blade flat heads and slowly pry around it till it pops out. Keep wedges under as you work it because they usually want to suck back into the tank if you let it go.
