I know someone that has a chance to buy a 5 ton dump truck at an auction. It is a chevy 1984 (or somewhere close to that) 5 ton diesel Dump with about 75,000 miles. How much do you think its worth, is it a good truck?

If the truck has 8.2 Fuel Pincher Detroit diesel power run away as fast as you can. You don't want that engine it is the biggest boat anchor you can buy.

Yeah, that DOT inspection is a PITA. Unless the rules have changed, he may be exempt from that. From what I remember, the inspection only applied to vehicles with a GVW of OVER 10,000 lbs -- which might be one reason to purchase the truck.

The truck is a 5 ton so I imagine it has a 30,000lb or more gvw so it will need a inspection. If the truck is in good shape it should pass a inspection. I wouldn't buy a truck if the inspection isn't current. If its expired and hasn't been inspected for awhile then ask the owner to have the truck inspected or drop the price.

I've heard exactly the same thing. My dad looked at a nice bucket truck with that motor, and all the mechanics he talked to said to buy it only if it was cheap enough to warrant a total engine swap to a Cummins or Cat.

GM built those engines to try compete with the 3208 but it flopped. The 8.2 was just as bad as the 6.5. If you buy a 8.2 you will be lucky to find parts the engines are not rebuildable. If you have a Chev truck with one once it blows up repower it with a 502 big block its the cheapest option.
