As I was flushing my zones last night, without the heads installed, I shut off the zone, and was shocked to experience some water hammer. Two or three bangs as the flow stopped. Is this normal without the heads providing some back pressure? Or do I have a serious problem on my hands here?

To recap: 1-1/4" main (approx 200' from 3/4" meter to valves), with 1" lats, and 3/4" on the last head in each zone, 65 psi static. Please tell me this is acceptable without the back pressure of the heads!

You can definitely get banging when zone valves open into an open pipe. You may also see it every spring when you first open the system, with the pipes being empty.

Thanks, WB, you nailed it, of course. Put some heads on those funny pipes, and no more hammer. 3 zones down, 4 more to go! Here's hopin' I can "get 'er done!" before Dennis hits us!
