Health Insurance

I seem to recall several instances of people mentioning on here that they don't have health insurance coverage for one reason or the other, usually because it is too expensive. I personally know several people who would say it was "cheaper to make payments" instead of buying health insurance in the past.

Well, as some of you may know, my wife ended up in the hospital the first of last month with what was eventually diagnosed as pneumonia. She spent 4 days in ICU, then 2 days in a regular room. Her total charges, over $70,000. Fortunately, we have health insurance, and it looks like our part is only going to be about $1,300.

Just some information I thought I'd pass along and perhaps give some of you something to think about.

Glad your wife is better and thanks for posting an example of the need for health insurance. I know someone that recently broke his jaw in two places (sucker punched). $65,000 covered in FULL.

Well your bill might be high but all you need to do if you don't have insurance is send them 5 dollars a month and they can't do **** about it! I have many friends that do this.. Sure they will never pay it off but they don't care what's 5 a month to some over priced hospital anyway...our health care system is this country is a joke as far as the money they charge for services.. Plus if you tell them your a self pay they'll take that 70 grand and make it about 20 grand seen it done all the time! I had friend that worked in the insurance side of a hospital and he said they would do that all the time! That tells you have much they raise there prices!

or just maybe it is cheaper to swallow, except a lower payment to avoid collection fees and law suits. All of us pay higher for fools like your "friends".

Many of the points you've made in your two replies are valid, but your overall outlook is way off. Everybody seems to want something for nothing. If we had socialized medicine, those same people who now complain about insurance premiums would be complaining about the higher taxes we would have to pay to support it. Many people (not all, I realize that), don't have health care not because they truly can't afford the premiums, but because they choose to spend the money on other things like new I-phones or cigarettes or booze or the sports package on the cable or the $50,000 truck when the $30,000 one would do the same thing, or going to the casino every month. People make choices, and they aren't always the smartest ones.

Very true! But I hate going to have a CT scan done that takes 5 minutes to have them tell you that part of your spline is dead but not enough to take out and you'll be fine! Then get a 5 grand bill for having the test done! That would be like me going out and charging 2 grand for mowing a 1 acre lot... We as landscapers couldn't get away with that and I see no reason why the medical field should either...

Pay good money for poor coverage.

To get the health coverage I had in the past so my wife an I would be covered would cost $12,000 as of the last I heard.

And I would gladly pay that.

Though I am to rich for Medicaid and to young for Medicare. We live as mean and lean as possible. The mortgage is our only loan. Though after food, utilities, gas, car upkeep, insurance on home and cars, tv, int, cell, we have no money left. We spend as little on clothes as possible.

Yes Obama can mandate that I have insurance. However no one has mandated me the money to pay for it.

A $300 a month insurance bill with having a $7,500 deductible is like having no insurance.

Matter of fact if my medical bills were $7,500 and I paid $3600 for insurance. It would of paid $11,100 out of my pocket that year.

I would be better off if I did not have insurance that year.
