I am pricing a job where the home owner wants the paver driveway heated.

I worked on a job a few years back where the homeowners wanted a heated driveway also, they thought it was the best thing since sliced bread the first few times they used it, that was till the electric bill came....as far as I know they never used it again and were slightly upset about the money spent on the system.

Contact your local HVAC contractor.....these sytems are great! One must consider the size of the area they are heating and the money saved long term in snow removal expenses plus the safety factor in having the system. They not only have electric systems but also radiant systems
We put in a walkway last year for a couple that wanted radiant heat installed. Basically, we did all the prepwork, had their regular plumber/heating guy come in and lay the pipes. Then we finished installing the walkway. The system they used was a glycol solution run off the existing house heating system. We get a lot of snow up here and the main purpose of the radiant heat was to melt leftover snow and dry out the walk after is was shoveled. Also helped out with freezing rain. The homeowners said the cost increase was not to much, but with such a huge increase in heating oil, I bet its use will be even less this year.

I would contact HVAC person. I did the grunt work insalling the pipe in the basement of my new home last year before floor was poured. The system i have is a tankless system very nice. Just wondering where under the paver would you run the pipe? Under the final layer of base or under the sand. Let me know?

Ya know, I got ta thinking that in MD it does not get as cold as it used to. So I priced the driveway without the heat system. If the price is acceptable thus-far, and if they're still interested in heating the pavers - I'll proceed with getting some quotes for heating.

The walkway we installed, we put down our base, 2" Styrofoam board and then the heating contractor put his tubes on the foam-board. Then we laid sand over that, then pavers. The sand layer is thicker than normal installations. We had to hand screed the sand and it was about 1.5" before we laid the pavers.

some recommend a blanket below the foam board that adds that much more insulation - although it's not needed
make sure the tubing is stapled to the foam board not tied to wire mesh, which used to be the way they did it. What would happen is that every time the system would turn on it would cause slight movement of the lines from the pressure on the wire which eventually would cut the tubing causing a leak
