Would like a little help with a mower decision. I am buying a 36" walk behind, belt drive. Interested in the Ferris which has a 15 hp motor and an exmark that has 12.5 hp. I guess my question is relly in regards to the machine. They look almost the same, except for the engine size. My company is strictly residential and we use 21" and 32" mowers for everything. Been at this for five years full time but never had to buy anything larger than the 32". Just got a new client (condo assoc.) and thought the 36" would make more since. I appreciate any help and I enjoy reading all the good info.

we have been using a gravley 36" for our back yards with fences for 6 years now and its a great machine. I beleive it has an upgraded kohler motor, 15hp single cylinder that cuts great. dont know any other small machines, but i think the gravley has been tried very well and they havent changed the design on them in many years so that makes me feel comfortable.

I visited a dealer the other day that I thought carried Gravely, at least that is what his add said. He didnt have any, but said he could get me one. What do you think honestly about the motor size. My 32" mowers have 12.5 hp, is that enough for 36"

depending on the thickness of the turf, but 12.5 is a little small for a full fledged 36". Are you going to run doubled blades?

it is my belief that 12.5 is about the industry standard. but if its not to much more....upgrade and then don't worry about it. our machine has cut 2' bahia, thankfully not often. so i guess it depends on your needs

All 36" Exmark belt drive walk-behinds are available with 15hp engines, so now it boils down to quality of cut. I think Exmark wins this one. Service should also play a role in your dicision making process.

Yeh- as Locutus said- can't you ask the dealer to order you a 15 hp on the eXmark? Or is the particluar mower a close out/as-is sale?

I have a JD 36" with a 15 hp Kohler and it is a horse!
