    Just bought my first house and moved in on Saturday. I know pretty much nothing about lawn or gardening care. I'm still not sure what type of lawn I have. The lawn is a little bit darker shade of green than I am used to seeing, and seems a tad bit thinner than most lawns, but not as thin as I've seen some other lawns. The sprinkler system is set up on a timer and I programmed it to come on everyday at 5:30am for about 15minutes per zone. I read that lawns need about 1" per week on average. Does this mean I water it once a week or 5 days a week totalling an inch of water? I really don't want to kill this lawn because it looks great right now. I just bought a mower and am planning to trim it a little on the tall side as I read this is good for summer weather coming up.
    Any help will be appreciated.

    congratulations on the new place! if you already have an irrigation system and you are worried about how much water to apply. call a local irrigation company. putting the system on for 15 minutes each day may either be too much or too little depending on where you live and your current weather. if possible you are going to want to put a moisture meter in the system you have now. what this does is when your lawn and shrubs? get below a certain level of plant available water your system comes on and brings it back up to a desireable level. so if you are experiencing a great deal of rain the system will stay dormant. and if you are in a drought it will be active. think about it like this. if it is raining at 5:30 in the morning do you really need to turn on your irrigation system at the same time?

    here's a great resource on Total Grass Identification ......Care .......Pest ......Water ......Etc.

    on irrigation ......once you fiqure your local needs ...(how much per day or weekly) ......place a few tuna can (low profile .....wide rim) around the yard .....turn on the system .....water until the amount of water desired is in the cans .....an that a good idea of length of time

    good luck ;->
