I'm asking for help with a few things from time to time. I have a very small company. Is $40 a day(4-6 hrs actual time) too little to pay someone? Thanks!

i would keep it constant. like choose an hourly rate. say 40 is for 5 hours. thatd be 8 an hour. keep it simple

what's the person's age, do you know ahead of time how dependable they are? I have 2 full time and 3 part time guys, my part time guys are college guys, 2 have helped out for 3 years now and one is new this year. I pay two of them $8.50 and hour and the other $7.50 just starting. College guys don't mind it. My two full time guys do better.

yeah make sense, if theyre older and maybe more expirienced they might need more then minimum wage.

I've found college kids, high school kids who are serious about it love the pay and love being outside. Lot better than $7.25 for flipping a burger during the summer. Plus I do give them flexibility to basically work from 15hrs a week up to 60, all I ask is they give me a day or two notice if they aren't going to work and that's worked out real well for the past 6 years. I've only had one kid that I've had to let go because of lack of communication.

I'm surprised no one has brought it up, but a big factor would be to know where you are. $7 an hour might seem good in the back woods of tenneessee, but it wouldn't cut the mustard in most cities. You said $40 for 4-6 hrs, so if the person works only four hours they will make equivalent to $10 an hour, but if they work 6hrs then they are only making 6.66 an hour. What's your state's minimum wage? Here for $10 an hour you will have a real tough time finding someone who is reliable. How many people would want to labor outside for minimum wage when they can get more than that working with their friends indoors, dry, with a.c. & heat

I think $10 an hr is a fair wage starting out. Minimum wage down here i think is $7.50. Honest days pay for a honest days work.

$7.25 is the federal minimum wage and people wont even flip burgers for that here.

We have two part time guys, both in community college and they started at 8.50. Florida minimum wage is 7.67 ish.

Labor is 10 or so.
Helper 8 to 9.

Helpers do not really work as hard and are kind of being trained to do things.

My definition is opposite. A helper is semiskilled and can operate equipment. A laborer is unskilled and basically hired muscle. I employ helpers and temp hire laborers for sod and big installs.:usflag:

yeah $8.hr is fair. on big jobs i throw in a lil more depending on what it is.

WOW some guys are cheap on here.

Min wage for working in 90+ degree heat???
Have some compassion.

I start all my guys at $10. After taxes there isn't that much take home.

Actually I guess $8.00 could get you a 12 year old because the minimum wage for minors is 85% of the minimum wage which is $8.25/hr...going up to $8.50 on the first of the year.
