I was wondering if there are any legal issues in hiring a minor
Yes. You need to check your state laws regarding the hiring of minors. IRRC, in Texas a minor (14 - 18 years old....i think) can work no more than 4 hours a day, during a school week. During summer and weekends 8 hours a day and no more than 40 hours a week. This is what I *remember* it being for Texas. Your state may vary.
It is the same with Louisiana.
If memory serves, there are also OSHA rules that place age limits on non-family employees using commercial mowing equipment.
Give your insurance company a call too. Power equipment and kids don't go together.
The problem w/ hiring minors is that some of them freak out in the daylight once you bring them above ground. The light they wear on their head tends to get caught in low lying branches and they have trouble walking the trimmer as it interferes w/ the motor.
