Homelite Super XL-12 help needed.

    Hey all,

    Okay I was given a 1966 Homelite super xl 12 saw by my grandpa that hasn't been run in about ten years or so. I'm leaning towards the "or so". It did have some gunk in the tank in a few places but not too bad. The carb was clean and it has good spark and compression but it doesn't seem to be getting any fuel. I shot some cleaner down the port in the carb and it blew most of it out when I spun it over so it has suction. There is a big piece of felt down one side of the tank which I'm guessing is some sort of filter. Put a full tank of fuel in it and pulled on it for a while, no dice. I looked in the tank when I got home from work before heading out to mow and the gas level had dropped quite a bit but there are no leaks. I'm going to give it another day before I try again maybe that felt will have absorbed enough gas to start pulling some fuel in.

    Also has anyone ever had any luck repairing a stripped out spark plug hole with a heli coil? There are enough threads left to hold it and there is no compression loss that I can tell but I will have to address this issue at some point, but I may have a shop do that.

    Sorry for writing a book but I've never tried to do something like this before and I want to have this running for my dad who grew up using this saw with his Grandfather and his dad.

    Need to be converted from you wick type fuel pick up to a fuel line and filter at the end of it

    How bad is that to do? I assume I can just seal off the old port and drill and seal an new hole for the new line. Or should I just pull the felt out and hook up a new fuel line with a filter to the old fitting? I'm not afraid to modify it a bit if I have to, I'm looking for a functioning saw not an award winning restoration.

    I really haven't had the time to dig into it too much other than just a rudimentary carb cleaning and filing the tank and pulling on it for a while, I'll know more when I get a chance to work on it, maybe i'll try running a fuel line from the inlet to the carb to my mixed gas tank as it has good suction.

    you could do either but i would dirll a new hole and seal everything off

    Okay here's a little upate: Turns out I don't need a heli-coil, it had the wrong sized spark plug in it. I also noticed that after I did that it seemed to gain some compression and it popped over a few times. At this point I'm going to order a carb kit and rebuild it. The old wick fuel intake appears to be letting fuel flow (I put a full tank of gas in it and let is sit since Monday) but I can't get it to pull any fuel. I can get fuel to the carb by tipping the saw up after which it popped over. So I'm getting closer to having a running saw. Also it turns out its just and XL not an XL-12

    The carb rebuild kit might very well fix your problem with drawing fuel. The diaphragms that pump fuel in many saws go bad with age or from exposure to ethanol. Replacing it may solve your fuel flow problems. If not, try a new fuel line and filter.

    No, man.

    It is almost going to take me more time in terms of labor hours just to type out this message than that Homelite is worth, you can find them and units like it on sale for $70 to $100 all day long, even if you had to wait 6 months for a sale to come around they are just not worth fixing, two hours labor and one part you're up into could have just brought a brand new one.

    Now I'm out of here before I waste any more time with those cheap units that are best off thrown in the garbage when they fail.

    The fuel line is should be okay. I shot some carb cleaner down the line from the carb inlet fitting and it sent bubbles up from the bottom of the tank so I know its clear and open. This saw has been sitting dry since at least 2003 so I'd say the diaphragms have seen better days. It wouldn't even pop when I shot some starting fluid into it. It will pop when you tip the saw up towards you and let some gas in but that's all you get.

    I'm really hoping that this will get the saw started. If not I've got a shop that I've talked to that has a guy that worked on these back in the day that would be interested in taking it on.
