How Bad is this paver job on lanai and patio? New Home Construction

Showed up at the house (set to be done in August) and the pavers are awful (or so I think) I get the sense the builder thinks I'm overreacting but could care less how he "feels" I used a long board to show the obvious "waves" "gaps" etc which while standing back your brain just sees this and senses that aesthetically it's off. Closer inspection reveal an uneven side view where the middle sinks and it's higher on the edges and where they meet the columns. First vertical row against the house is higher, slopes oddly down but not at a consistent angle, and it's not flat/even. They also spilled paint and plaster on them.....I'm not a construction or engineering guy. But my suspicion is that the "footer" around the perimeter of the lanai that was poured with my foundation had lumpy uneven top. I think the sub contracted paver guys didn't have a chip tool and were lazy. Placed them over uneven footer edge and didn't pack/fill the middle correctly. Any experts out there, please let me know your thoughts. Need some technical reasons so I can speak intelligently to this instead of just "looks like Sh**" In all honesty, I don't want this fixed, I want it ripped out and done right. One of the images shows the same issue on small front patio (side view) The driveway was perfect. I really think the footers being uneven + lazy subs are the root of this. Lemme know your thoughts.

Agreed, doesn’t look great, a really sloppy job, not what a pro job around my area looks like. what did they use for a base? Was it an open area with a footer around the outside? That can be done, they would have had to grind the footer somewhat flat if it wasn’t already and shim/glue the pavers to make it look nice. The interior should ideally have a consistent slope away from the house to shed water.

I concur with Toro and I think that's exactly what it was. Yes there's a footer wall and I think they either didn't have a chip tool or were too lazy to do it right. It looks freaking awful. Randomly the driveway looks great and that makes sense because the day I was there there was a different person in each area working. I guess they had the B team out back and on the porch. I was up there today to look at their laughable fix they did. Looks worse. I'll post a few pics.

Bring it up to the contractor, it’s pretty sloppy around the edges, and generally the pavers should be the same height. I don’t know how it was installed or why a footer was poured around the edge, the footer makes it more complicated than having nothing in the way.

Looks to me like this is a compaction(lack of) issue with the base. It most likely was flatter upon completion and is settling now in a short amount of time. The pavers on the footer are still at the original build height and everything inside of that is starting to settle.

This is tricky because I'm sure the contractor wants to get paid so you'll want to get your ducks in order, otherwise they'll just place a lien on the house and it'll stay there until the day you go to sell... Personally speaking and I'm no expert but I would want those guys to get off my property and don't come back, if they want to take their materials with them that would be all right with me, too... But again you'll want some sort of representation or the contractor can get ugly with you, perhaps consult with an attorney...

Yea I had a contractor do a bad tile job that I wanted redone but I still paid the guy and will redo it. Its waterproof and the tile is technically installed, so he has somewhat of a claim to the money if this were in court, plus I felt bad the guy made no money as it was. So while its not the best job in the world, it may be considered good enough to be paid in court. Doesn't seem like the spilled paint has anything to do with the actual paver guys though. That will have to be somehow washed off with chemicals. It will be a nice rustic look and you wont have to worry about spilling stuff or messing up the pavers at least.

I had a contractor tell me I was being "nit picky" when I showed him all the half-arsed work he and his crew had done.
When he told me that I was in the process of pointing out how every freaking spindle in the front porch railing (they built us a new porch) was a different spacing from the next - it was as though they just eyeballed the spacing.
"I don't see what's wrong with it" he said. I told him to take the tape measure off his waist and start measuring.
There was as much as a 2" difference in spacing from one to the next.
He grumbled a bit, but agreed to fix it.
Maybe should have done it correctly in the first place?

That's a complete tear out and redo job...maybe from a reputable experienced contractor!! I mean, I think most anyone with zero experience could do at least as good a job as that! Simply HORRIBLE!!

Just so everyone’s clear, that patio is laid with tumbled pavers in a random old world cobble mold.
The idea is they mimic European or middle eastern roads back with blocks were hand hewn
As a result
The height stone to stone isn’t going to be exact and the distance/ tolerance in the seams between blocks won’t be the same.
There’s literally nothing the installer can do to make them straight and even
It’s by design for the block chosen
It’s a rustic stone appearance
Believe it or not, those blocks cost additional over a standard smooth flat brick like traditional block.
People pay extra for it.

the soldier course being raised like that is an issue with the footer on the foundation of the house being poured too proud, not something the paver installer technically did wrong himself.
The shim price of block in the soldier course could have been an oddly cut block instead …. Take your pick , the block is x width , the length of the course is Y , something needed to be cut somewhere

I would have put the shim/cut next to the starting point and not in the pattern. But the installer is working with fixed distances and measurements he didn’t choose or control.

who hired the paver guy?
The GC/developer?

Those are not tumbled pavers and/or some kind of premium pavers from a mold that would result in pavers with different heights. The final compaction on top of the pavers would have set the height even and smooth. This is an example of someone that just didn't care and of how pavers patios are constructed local to the area.
OP please follow up on this and let us know what was done to remedy this so we can close this one out.

Sent those pics to a buddy who is a landscaping contractor and the first thing he said was, this is exactly what happens when a homeowner with zero knowledge tries to do this....he said his 9 year old would do a better job than this and said it needs to be completely taken out and done right. I just sent the response about how it's supposed to be uneven, old world etc. and he sent back a LMAO and said yeah, whoever said that knows nothing about this kind of work...well, he wasn't exactly that kind, but you get the idea. He also can't believe this is the work of a paid contractor. By code in most cities/towns he said it definitely would not pass an inspection. His advise is to call the general contractor and city inspector for a meeting.

I'm still giggling at people pay extra for trip hazards, crooked everything, a small pool when it rains or washed and of course the paint splatters from the painters...hopefully the house in general is in better shape than what these jokers have accomplished!!

So when you flying to Hawaii to redo it?
You know there's such an excess of labor on the mainland but sure lots of labor on an island.....

This was done by the builder according to the op

Anyone that's decent in any trade has a long waiting list!!!
