How do you Measure Noise?

Is there an industry-accepted standard for how noisy a machine is? My 35-year-old Yanmar diesel tractor is comfortably quiet, whereas on my 2-yr-old Grasshopper with a similar engine, I need hearing protectors. I'd like my next machine to be quiet, but no maker gives noise specs. Is that because there aren't any accepted ones?

I believe that the amount of noise produced from any machine will vary, that said always wear head phones or ear plugs period. The cumulative damage is gradual and will occur sooner than later with out protection.

I'll wear hearing protection when I run a vacuum cleaner in the house. Dead serious. Over time your hearing degrades even with low level background noise. I wear Shure In ear monitors -25dB plus external Peltor H10A's muffs over the top of them. My hats off to those who wear plugs plus muffs.

Part of the equation is the frequency not just the decibel rating.

This is the reason that 85+ year olds who live in primitive tribes/cultures even today have the hearing equivalent of a 30 something person from and industrialized country.

All equipment being manufactured in or shipped into the EU has to conform with the Machinery Directive. There are no limits or requirements for the US.

Here is the document that describes the measurement method and limits.

Thanks for the advice about hearing protection. And especially the info from Jim because I wouldn't have guessed that Europe was so far ahead of North America (I'm in Canada) on quantifying and controlling machinery noise.

If you have a smart phone there are decibel apps available for free!
