My Ferris WB's (dual hydros) will go 6.5 mph forward...I believe the same in reverse. And yes, I can do a 180 turn with them simply by allowing one tire to continually go forward and squeezing the other hand grip to make the other tire go completely backwards...thus a zero turn.
sounds like to me it would/nt be a bad investment to get one
We've had them since Day One...I can't even think how we would be without them.
The new Hustler super WB's will top out around 10mph and 5 mph backwards. The super WB's' have the newer larger tire/rim combo (currently the largest) to allow actual mowing at 10mph if the lawn is smooth enough.

Jeez Louise Pete..are they that fast???
My Scag is 7.5 forward...who cares about reverse speed......besides Pete.

Funny, my helper is going through a bit of a rough time, and while we were cutting the back lot of this property I asked if he wanted to use my machine (54"/25hp bullrider wb)(super WB) and he said sure. After he was done he said, "Ya know, this is so fast and fun, all I can say is it's actually exciting". One friend say it's like riding a jet ski, I still think it's more like skiing.
Please keep in mind, the Hustler is not so special, it's just that the super WB is just a bit faster and equipped with the larger tires to handle the speed. I’ll bet by next season the rest of the manufacturers will have the same thing……. Now the H bar, that’s another story.
Now remember, just like a 10mph rider, you can't go fast on every lawn, in fact most lawns don't lend themselves to much more than 6 to 8 mph.

My gear drive scag will run 7 or 7.5.It wouldn't mow worth a flip wide open.I mow mostly in 3rd sometimes 4th if its perfect, never 5th gr.ITs a 17/48 with doubles I back down a gr. but it cuts it cleaner. My ztr will mow wfo if you can stand to be on it.;)

And what's wrong this that???:D
Actually the big difference is the rear tires. I think you have 16" tires, the Hustler has 20" tires. Just like the riders, bigger tires give a smoother ride, especially since Hustler is using 8" rims. FYI, there's no way I could actually go 9 or 10 mph with the older standard tires on my WB.

with twin cyl engine can be the most productive and versitile machines in the stable. been running a 16 hp v twin bunton 52" hydro and jungle wheels for about 6 years. couldnt replace it with anything but a 52" hydro w/b with jungle wheels and a 18-20hp twin, try it you will enjoy it.
Going back to the original question:

A HYDRO walk behind is a zero turn....belt drive versions are NOT

And, as far as riders, "pretty much" only a Hydro castored velky WB will actually zeroturn without taking the grass with it. Riders, basically need to K turn, unless they are on pavement. Naturally, a hydro WB will zeroturn.
I still consider belt driven as zero turn too. I feel anything that you can pull a 180 or a 360 with without moving one of the tires is a zero turn...maybe I am wrong

Zeroturn is supposed to mean "zero turning radius". The only way to truly have a "zero radius turning circle" is have the machine pivot through the center of it's axis, or center of the rear wheel axle. So, for arguments sake, a zeroturn if done "correctly" should have one rear wheel move forward while the other rear wheel moves backward, and each move at the same speed.
However, what you say works fine for me, too...............
ya I see what you mean...I have always just taken it two different ways. But I do agree with your point.
a zero turn can turn in its own dimensions
ok thanks for the information think i will start shopping around for one for next season
