I dont understand your logic at all. You work hours that you really dont count as working???????? If im working and not having fun (i.e. hiking, kayaking, riding my harley, playing music) than i COUNT it as working ........ seems pretty cut and dried unless im missing something.

The number of accounts cut does not matter as much as what you bring home. However, the guys I work with are great. We work hard days during the growing season, but when you can work with guys that are friends, those 12 hour days aren't so bad.

How many I have is irrelevant, it's how much money I make per an hour.
I'll have to disagree with this slightly. I agree with what I think Mike was trying to convey - if you're not profitable it doesn't matter how many accounts you have. But that being said, the total number of accounts DOES make a big difference.

My 170 or so accounts at an avg. of $30- $35 per man hour are going to bring in a lot more money each month than Joe Blow's 25 accounts at $45 per man hour. Now if Joe is able to keep up that same profitablility when he gets to 170 clients, like me, then he'd be kicking my butt. But until then, I am doing much better overall.

And actually, the man hour rate isn't the best tool for comparison either. Everyone's costs vary and I may be making GREAT money at $35 per man hour (being that I use older trucks, pay almost nothing for dumping yard debris, use cheaper labor, etc.) and Joe Blow may be making very little, even at his $45 per hour because maybe he uses new trucks, the dump is 30 miles away, it costs a fortune to dump, gas is more expensive where he lives, no cheap labor, etc.......

Good example Jim...

That also like saying I have 120 accounts, but 3 customers I do 20 properties each for them, and also have many 15-20 acres accounts.

So are we still comparing apples to apples?

I know what your accounts are, but not many others do.

Exactly. Your 120 accounts may be bringing in WAY MORE than my 170 postage stamp accounts. Who knows? But it's agreed that total number of accounts is a bad way to compare businesses.

I am solo, a part-time helper now and again, so I thought I would keep it small. It did not work. I have 60 customers. About 25 every week maintenance, 10- 15 every 2-3 week maintenance. The rest are as needed landscape customers. The money comes in well so I found it hard to say no to new customers. Now I only take customers in the same areas as the ones I have now.
