How Many repairs is too many?

    We installed a pond appox. two months ago and it seems like every three or four days the guy is calling complaning that the pond is leeking. It is just the ground settling and we keep fixing it for free what can i do. When should I start charging. We are driving about 20min. one way every time. We cut costs on the pond so it probably only cost about $500 for him. I feel sorry for the guy having to get up off of his butt and go out and move the mulch back and pack a little dirt in the low spot once in a while and it has slowed down he hasn't called in about a week this time. Getting Kind off angry with him he still owes me $400.00 from another job we did later.

    I always fix my work for free. But up till now I've never had one leak. I know gound settles, but you need to account for that when you make it. I think once your product runs perfect for a month straight... then you can charge for repairs, but it really depends on whether or not its an instal error.
    As for the 400... get that now. Work you've done right always gets paid as soon as you ask.

    yea its not all that big and Ive got some connections in the pond industry.

    for 500 bucks i wouldnt go back any more.. he got what he paid for,. I would have never charged 500 bucks to build a pond.. that barely covers a days labor and gas.

    Yeah... 500 equals a bathtub with one pump... no filter :)

    with so many "connections" they should be giving you some instruction about the typical $$ you should be making off ponds.

    Go take a class, tag-a-long with a pond builder, read a book, something.
    $500 will get you absolutely NO WHERE in pond building.

    You should have very minumum setteling if you compacted the soil around like it should be.There is no reason for it to be built where all a customer has to do is pull back mulch and pack dirt in to fill a low spot in.Something major wrong there.No wonder it is leaking.
    It matters not what you charged him,you agreed to a price and installing a non-leaking pond is your responsibility .
    I don't care if you charged him a dollar ..that was the price you charged and it does not make it ok for you to scrimp on the quality of the work because the price was low.
    Go out and rebuild it or fix it right
    (having to go over and over makes me think it is not right)
    to stop the complaints and while your there give him a late notice on the other money he owes you or ask to be paid right then.
    One job is seperate from the other in your mind but NOT in your customers mind.

    The ansswer to your question is ONE. One repair is to many. Doesn't matter what type of work you did. Warranty work is always a pain, but DO IT. Make it right above all else. It doesn't matter if you gave him a bargain or a freebie (a pond for $500 sounds like a freebie to me). If he owes you other money, then this is not the only project. Warranty work is also for customers who are CURRENT. Your customer needs to get current for you to do warranty work. If they think they need to hold back money to get warranty work done, then you have the wrong kind of relationship.

    I guarantee most of my work for a full year parts and labor. That limits my LIABILITY, not my RESPONSIBILIY. I have fixed things that were either my fault of the company I was working for as much as 5 years after the mistake was made. That type of "warranty" work is at my discretion. If I feel responsible, I don't bill for the work. This sounds like your responsibility.
