If your only upcharging it $5 per yard, u are not making anything and doing it way too cheap. U should be able to get $50 a yard, so for a 5 yard job, u should be able to get $250 and pocket $125

I was told to charge 2-3 times the $ amount of what it cost you (ex. your cost $15. a yard charge them $30. a yard 2x or $45. a yard ) that will cover your hauling and labor .
I get several different varieties of mulch from my supplier, the most popular being a twice ground hardwood mulch that I get for $10 per yard. In this immediate area I get anywhere from $35 to $40 per yard, delivered & spread (edging is extra). The few clients I have about fifty miles to the north of me ( metropolitan area) I can get $50 to $55 per yard for same mulch. True I have to drive about 35 miles extra, but I can haul about 12 yards per trip with the dump trailer & truck bed.
I get $75 a yard for mulch. if it is over 10 yards, I charge $65. My average cost on double ground black dyed mulch is $24-$26 delivered. any les than $65 and it is a waste of a job.
you should be getting at least $50 per yard, for your pick up, delivery, and labor to install. if it's costing you $25 a yard (a bit steep i'd say) then u need to get at least $75 total per yd.
I charge between 70-80 a yard, less if it is mass quantity. I buy it at 23 a yard. I also include a treatment of snapshot before and after the mulch is put down, so figure another 1.50 a pound for that out of the install price.
I am bidding on a job that calls for 52 yards of mulch. I can have it delivered for 20 a yard. The shortest distance that i will have to wheel barrel it is 150 ft. The greatest is around 300. Where should i be at a yard? Should i go less per a yard then normal because its so many yards?
Green-Pro, I see you live in Iowa, I live in WI.. I have used the twice shredded hardwood mulch on a job and liked the product. At $10 a yard do you buy in bulk? DO you pick it up? What's the name of the supplier if you don't mind me asking. Thanks Dave.

Yeah I buy it in bulk, but only in the amount I need that is anywhere from 3 to 20 yards at a time. They are only four miles from my house so I never store it here, its just as simple to hook on to the dump trailer & pick it up on the way to a job. If I get home early enough in the afternoon (before 4) I will run over to get mulch to be ready for early start the following day. Suppliers name is 4h Wood Products, they sell shavings for animal bedding, decorative boulders, three varieties of mulch (twice ground hardwood, cedar, & your basic wood chips)
Give out coffee mugs, reminder note books with pens, and coupons for free ice cream cones at the local Dairy Mart
Hard to beat the small town business guy especially in service IMO
I get double ground black dyed mulch for $25 a yard at Agway and they charge me $15 delivery within 5 miles and $25 up to 15 miles. I have a mexican kid that can spread 12 yards by wheelbarrow in an 8 hour day. I pay him $10 an hour and buy him breakfast and lunch. I'm just outside of Princeton NJ and I can get anywhere from $65 to $75 a yard for a mulch job. When I work in the less affluent areas I charge $55 a yard. I get a lot of jobs where johnny weekend warrior orders mulch and then after spreading a few yards realizes its more work than he realizes. When I get those jobs I charge $25 to $30 per man hour to spread it.

Is that 30 on top of the 25? if so your loosing a lot of money! I at least double the price of the mulch per yard- I pay usually $19.00/yrd and I advertise $45.00/yrd spread plus a $35.00 delivery fee and I'm still one of the cheapest around. Some guys around here are in the $70's per yard.
It is very possible the price of mulch has gone up since I last did some this spring but I was paying $11.50 / yard and charging $45 delivered AND spread. Around here I found it really hard to get anyone to pay $50 / yard even when it was Premium D/S Hardwood so I started using D/S Fiber instead which is a lot cheaper... But, that was in spring ... don't care much for mulch in the hot temps, too much for me... and mulch gets to me after I've done 100 cu.yards or so, I've had enough for 2-3 months.

Mulch is usually "cheap" say $19-$25 per cubic yard. You think if someone ordered mulch delivered theyd have to pay a delivery fee.
I use a full size 8ft bed pickup truck for the mulch. I have a high rise cap on it too which makes my life hard since i cant have it dumped in from a bucket, i hand shovel most of it in. I also dont do a ton of mulch jobs in my area.
I have though charged say to pickup and deliver and spread out 3 cu. yards in NJ about $90hr labor including the mulch, if you break down how i feel i make the money its, $50-60 per load and $30ish to spread that load... Of course im basing my work on hours spent to pickup , drive, unload and spread the mulch so it took me 6hrs for 3 loads of mulch before.
Dont mulch cheap, i use more than i need, dont want weeds or it to look bad a week after, people usually DONT want to get dirty doing this and dont evne know where to get mulch anyway. besides lowes/home depot in bags for $4-5 PER small bag. At that rate they assume mulch is $300 per 500lbs worth lol. Ive had no problem with remulching fronts of houses by myself and spending about $60-80 in mulch and having a total bill of $400-$500.
Your doing manual labor, its your time, your using your vehicle with heavy weight loads and you could/would rather be riding around on the Zero Turn for an hour making the same amount right?
do any of you guys charge a flat rate for the entire cleanup... like a flat rate per yard that covers edging, pruning, cleanup of all beds etc? or are u guys just talking just showing up and putting it down?
