Alright, after reading some of the manual it seems you need to roll it forward a little after releasing the drive in order to free up the gears. This will take some getting used to.
I have read a lot about grass clippings getting into the front gear box, I hope this isn't a common issue.

You're right on both accounts. I use one of these regularly. Let of the handles just a second before you pull it backwards, and the drive will disengage - allowing it to roll freely.

About once a month (or depending upon how often you use it) give the front end a thorough cleaning (pull the front wheels off) in order to help prevent grass buildup in and around the gear box.
