I suggest hydro. I've owned two belt drivens and I used to run a hydro and I definitely prefer a hydro. Just my opinion.

    PROS) cheaper
CONS) Belts can slip in wet (mowing) conditions

PROS) very reliable, Wheels never slip since no belt ...
CONS) Costly, usually $1,000 plus, more than belt drive...

Myself, don't care since, I never mow in early mornings ....

You can go from forward to reverse with out changing gears on a hydro.

He's getting i nto the buisness... not running one for 5 years....do you get a kickback for selling hydros....

You will be fine starting with a belt drive, they are much cheaper to buy, to repair and if you don't make it in this biz your not stuck with a machine your going to lose your tail on

Belt drives work pretty good. They are simple and cheap. Good thing to get started in the buisness with.
