Hydro or wheel motor problem?

    Hi folks! One of my Toro Zmasters is starting to lose it's control on the sticks. When I go to slow down, the control is a little sloppy and the when the tire does slow down it kinda does it suddenly and sometimes skids a little for no apparent reason. I was just curious if those of you have replaced or repaired wheel motors and hydros...what are the symptoms? and how can you tell what the problem is? Thanks so much!

    I had the same exact problem (based on your description) It ended up being my wheel pump. I have a Gravely and the pumps are the 16cc pumps and on the Toro they are the 10cc. It cost me $300.00 to have it professionally rebuilt. BUT before you have it looked at check the struts that make the arms slide forward and backward smooth. If you have any questions let me know its kinda hard to explain some stuff :)

    If you're losing control on the sticks you may want to check to see if the control arm(s) on the pump(s) are not slipping on the pump shaft.

    Thanks so much, folks. Yes, I will double check the connections again but I looked a few weeks ago when I first started to notice and they were all solid. The hour meter broke on this machine but it's a 2007 I estimate it has about 1500 hrs all on original motors and pumps so it's probably due. David, did you have the dealer rebuild it or a machine shop or something? Thanks!

    I had a gravely, that had some weird laminated lock nuts, on the wheel hubs. Hard to know if they had the required 300 ft-lbs of torque, necessary. Anyway, nut would get loose, key would get loose, tire would skid. Would have to rebuild the motor, cause the armature was f'd up,by the wallered out key. Best day of my life was when I sold that gravely, to a lawn mower jockey, at an auction. Didn't feel the least bit guilty!:laugh:

    I had a hydraulics specialist do it. My dealer doesn't rebuild them they just want to sell new ones and charge me 600-700 bucks. The rebuild is just as good because he put all new parts inside, the guy who did it is a hydraulics genius :). Anyway good luck! Oh i should mention I did tale the pump out myself and put it back it to save on labor
