    Ferris IS3200 72” deck.

Just curious if the shelf on the bottom of my deck actually does anything besides collect grass?
I’ve kicked around the idea of welding a plate to cover it up but I’m not sure if it’s needed for air flow.
    Any deck experts out there?

Good idea. it should be flowing air in from that area, cover that with a plate and lose the flap.

I’m sure it’s fine. I imagine the engineers would have covered it if it mattered.

It matters to me because it’s a royal pain to clean it out. I can’t even get it with a pressure washer. I have to lift the mower and reach back there with my hands or a crooked stick.
I just found this pic of the 2017 ICD deck (mines a 2016). Looks like they redesigned that part. Now I’m wondering if I can just cut it out.

Always wondered what a Ferris deck looks like...Exmark like.

That back part is just reinforcement structure
    The flap is for striping

I have a 2014 61” deck and cut all kinds of conditions and scrape when needed but have never needed to clean out this area. Get rid of the flap tho, it’s a waste to me. I removed mine shortly after using the mower.

There really is no need to clean that area. You may be over thinking this and your time would be better used else where. Or you have too much time and not enough work. Trying to clean that area is a complete waste of time and resources. It does not matter with the performance.

More like the 7 Iron with the MOD than an Exmark. Very close to a MOD deck.

Interesting to see underneath though. From what I hear, the ferris ICD is up there with the Scag V+ as far as cut quality and performance. I may have to give Ferris a try.
