This may be a stupid question but here's what I am looking to do. A customer of mine would like me to level out a low spot in his yard and install a few stepping stones. (see attached pictures). What would be the best way to install these? Cut out the grass and level the soil underneath so these stones have a solid base?

place the stone in the desired area, outline the sod to cut, remove the sod tam the ground real good and then place the stones, you could use a base material like stone dust or such, but I dont think it would be necessary

I knew I was over thinking the job. But in the past I have seen several homeowners just lay the stone on the ground and expect it to look like what I have pictured. Thanks for your reply

no if you want the look in the above pic, you will have to put them in the soil. Good Luck

I could be wrong, But it looks like what my suppliers are calling pennsylvana blue stone. I hope this helps, if nothing else it will bump you to the top and maybe someone else can help you.

Looks like a type of flagstone. They sell it at Russell's in various sizes. Probably have it at Felber's also.
