Is it okay to aerate the lawn right now? Will I do more harm or should I wait to the fall?
Just don't hit the irrigation lines or heads and you should be fine. Although the fall is the best time to do it atleast up here in the NorthEast.
i roll in spring and aerate in fall but you can do it in the spring if your adding fertilizer. rolling makes the ride smoother
You can aerate anytime you want. I wouldn't do it when the lawn is under stress, like during a drought, but otherwise any time is ok.
We aerate spring and fall due to heavily clayes soils in our area. roots are super saturated with water now being end of winter early spring so i assume long island is also as you are near my temperate zone, so aerating helps the ground dry out much faster also, if you want to use 3 lbs per 1000 sq feet of seed , now is great time to overseed too after aerating. make sure you havent applied a crabgrass pre-emergent tho
